Recently I became aware, through the Wikipedia Signpost, of a former contributor to this wiki and OSM who has sadly passed away. Wikipedia has a well-documented procedure for respectfully responding to news of the deceased, including protecting their user page (since they won’t be able to respond to any defacement), turning off subscriptions (to avoid spamming their families with irrelevant notifications), and optionally posting an obituary. In some cases, those who had advanced permissions are blocked (since they won’t be able to defend against identity theft). Should we adopt any of these steps here on this wiki? &ndash;&nbsp;Minh <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Nguyễn</span>&nbsp;<span style="display: inline-block;">&#x1f4ac;</span> 05:42, 6 July 2024 (UTC)

: That sounds like a good idea and I think we should set it up that way. I just have one question: Should/can we announce the death of a user (as a reason for inactivity), or should we simply state that the user account has been deactivated? I think the announcement and/or obituary should only be made in cases of public or widely well-known users, or if the relatives approve it. --Chris2map (talk) 15:44, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
