Proposed value

Intent: To mark the location of Pétanque (french game similar to bowls) fields.

I just past by one yesterday and was wondering how/whether to tag it. It's probably useful to indicate how many 'lanes' there are. Polyglot 07:06, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Tagging

The new value may be used with the sport tag with nodes or areas. The proposed tag is:

<tag k="sport" v="boules"/>
<tag k="type" v="petanque|lyonnaise|extreme|<other types>"/> (optional)

Proposed Rendering

Nodes: a petanque ball (not sure if it would be possible to distinguish this from a football/basketball/netball etc. with a small icon?)

How about a large ball next to a tiny ball? --T99 10:48, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

Opinion

  • I'd prefer a tag value of 'boules' -- according to wikipedia, this term encompasses the similar games of pétanque, boule, bocce. Also, I'd tend to put this in 'leisure=', but I don't know how leisure and sport are differentiated. Robx 09:46, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
    • I think the idea is something like leisure=pitch can be given more detail with sport=football. So at the least a map render could show a pitch or whatever the physical thing is without having to know every sport. So I think this proposal should be to use sport with leisure=pitch. - LastGrape 13:33, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
  • I just saw that 'sport=bowls' exists already. How about changing this to 'sport=boules', and differentiating via 'type=' or 'surface=grass/gravel'? Robx 09:54, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
changing it to boules is a good idea, yes there are different varieties of that games, of which petanque is one, they are different Myfanwy 18:36, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

    • i certainly haven't changed anything in the proposal, or see any other changes that have been made. what do you think has changed, maybe you can find something in the diffs? Myfanwy 22:20, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
  • I approve the standardisation on boule. The main problem here is EITHER we standardise on English tags, or we sort out some means of handle the inherently multilingual nature of what is being recorded. I still find the use of a fixed language archaic and would prefer to see numeric tags with PROPER translated sets of text tables for each language but until that happens ONLY English tags should be used - which is a form of 'bowls' in my dictionary? Lsces 20:02, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
it is a french word, but it's an english word as well. see [1] and [2] for info. see also: ballet, chassis, and many more. Myfanwy 23:49, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
p%C3%A9tanque can not be written correctly with a basic ascii code set THEREFORE it can cause problems Lsces 07:09, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
