The Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) [1] is the "centralized information system incorporating all Texas natural resource data, socioeconomic data related to natural resources, and indexes related to that data that are collected by state agencies or other entities." They have informed us that all the data on the site is public domain.

State-scale shapefiles available: airport points, airport boundary polygons (larger airports only), city (point and polygon), counties, parks, cultural (airports, golf courses, colleges, wildlife management areas, etc), railroads, "gazeteer" (mainly schools and hospitals (likely from GNIS)).

County-scale shapefiles available: roads, (more)

GIS road data attributes

The following are the attributes present in the GIS road files for each county's highway shapefile.

SHP attribute should be in OSM? (y/n) OSM tag description
Shape n (shapefile specific) Feature Geometry
Prefix n (will use "Full_Name" field) Modifier to street name
Pretype n (will use "Full_Name" field) Supports geocoding, which allows for additional parsing of segment names.
Name n (will use "Full_Name" field) Feature name
Type n (will use "Full_Name" field) Feature street type (ST, RD, HWY, etc...)
Ext n (will use "Full_Name" field) Feature Extension
Suffix n (will use "Full_Name" field) Modifier to street name
FCC y (use scheme similar to TIGER) highway: Feature Class Code. 1st char. classifies feature, 2nd char. describes major category, 3rd char. describes minor category.
Postal_L n (not useful?) 5-digit ZIP code on left side of street segment
Postal_R n (not useful?) 5-digit ZIP code on right side of street segment
Name type n (every shape has label of 'R', don't know use of this) Indicates whether the street name can be used for geocoding or routing
Shield ? (may be useful for refs or relations) The first character of the shield field indicates what shield should be used to represent each name based on its primary source.
Hwy_num ? (may be useful for refs or relations) Shows highway number on shield for that segment. Will only be displayed on FCC segments with A1, A2, or A3.
Seg_len n (useless when way gets split) Segment length
Ft_dir ? (only used on Interstates, shows travel direction?) Conveys information about the described direction of travel along highways in the digitized From-to direction. 8 cardinal directions.
Tf_dir ? (only used on Interstates, shows travel direction?) Conveys information about the described direction of travel along highways in the digitized To-from direction. 8 cardinal directions.
Name_flag n (derived) Coded indicator of whether street name is appropriate for statewide or cross country routing (1), for geocoding (2), and whether the routing name is also appropriate for geocoding (3).
Name_srce n (not useful) Conveys where the name on a segment was derived from
Geom_srce n (not useful) Conveys what was used to modify the position of a street segment
Geom_acc Conveys whether the positional accuracy of the segment was verified
A#_prefix n (will use "Full_Name" field) Alternate prefixes (# = 1-5)

A#_nm_srce n Altername nm_srce (# = 1-5)
State00_L ? (might be able to use for "is in" tagging?) State FIPS code. Used for geocoding (L=left)
State00_R ? (might be able to use for "is in" tagging?) State FIPS code. Used for geocoding (R=right)
County00_L ? (might be able to use for "is in" tagging?) County FIPS code. Used for geocoding (L=left)
