It is an energy storage device that stores energy in the form of hot water in a large mostly cylindrical, insulated container. The water can reach temperatures above 100° C.

The input can be the waste heat from a power plant, an industrial process, wind power, a solar thermal power plant with solar collectors and so on.

The stored energy can be used for heating or as hot water for houses.
