information sign

The meaning of this tag is ambiguous and unclear. Consider using another tag that better describes the object. For instance landuse=commercial. See talk page for discussion.

Use tag landuse=institutional to delineate areas of land used for institutional purposes, see  Institution (disambiguation). Institutional land may include buildings like an office=government, office=ngo, office=association, amenity=social_facility and their associated infrastructure (car parks, service roads, yards and so-on).

How to map

Where possible, it is preferred to map as an area, otherwise a node at the centre of the area can be used. Either way, put the tag landuse=institutional on the area or node.

The area can contain the whole institutional zone together with parking lots and streets.

When not to use

This tag should only be used for areas which are – as a whole – primarily used for institutional purposes. It should not be used sweepingly for larger areas containing institutional infrastructure at different places but most of the area as a whole not being used institutionally.
