Description

An area of concentrated prostitution and adult services. Sometimes legal and sanctioned, sometimes illegal and non-official.

Why Needed?

Due to the number of cities where the red light districts are effectively tourist attractions (e.g. Amsterdam, London - Soho, Hamburg - Reeperbahn, etc.) a need exists to describe this area similarly to how we describe other 'trade' areas and land use's. Also, it is important to have this information out there so that people using OSM as a tourist map may easily avoid these areas if they wish.

Proposed Tagging

GENERAL:

  • leisure=red_light_district

FOR HIGH PROFILE ZONES, ADDITIONAL TAGS:

  • Tourism=Attraction

Miscellaneous

Names are not needed as they are universally referred to just as 'the red light district' followed by the street they go down, which is tagged in OSM already.

For rendering, the land use should be deep red.

No need for it to be tagged landuse since the areas operate in streets and areas where the landuse may by commercial, residential, etc.
