place=province is a subdivision of a country similar to a state. Some countries have provinces rather than states.

How to map

When the province boundaries are unknown, it's possible to represent a province as a node tagged with place=province along with name=*.

If the boundaries are known, a more common approach is to map provinces using a relation tagged as type=boundary, boundary=administrative, and admin_level=*.

When representing the province as a boundary relation, it is not recommended to use place=province on the relation itself. However, it can be included on a separate Role label node to indicate the placement of the province label.
