There is a significant number of relations not complying with the roles defined in this way by the OpenRailwayMap tagging scheme. In some cases, the respective rail tracks way railway=rail/subway/… of the controlled area are included as members of the relations. In particular in many non-German-speaking countries, where the concept of operating sites may not exist, there often is no relation railway=facility member, but signals and switches are included individually. The physical extent of the interlocking is then often expressed by including an additional area landuse=railway area in the relation.

History

Previously, interlocking relations had been tagged as railway=controlled_area. This tagging was deprecated in favour of interlocking in 2014.
