I added suggestions for best practices on tagging names, drawing on how Japan is tagged with mixed Japanese and English.

I also made suggestions on how to tag islands. Specifically, my biggest complaint is that there should not be a node placed at the center of an island to mark its name; this is tagging for the renderer and should be avoided, since we have the whole coastline available to tag.

Let me know if you have comments or suggestions on the recommendations I added. --BigPeteB 17:45, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Wrong language tag for Hawaiian

Please note that many names in Hawaiian have been added with the wrong language code - name:hi (which is actually for Hindi) instead of name:haw for Hawaiian. A list can be seen here; http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/name:hi#values . Scroll down if necessary. The most frequent instance at time of writing was 10 instances of 'Olena. Two ways to check these:
  1. Look around Hawaii using the Multilingual Maps Test set to only display Hindi names
  2. In Overpass Turbo, look for nodes and ways in Hawaii tagged name:hi (excluded relations as the Hawaii relation is properly tagged name:hi in Hindi)
