Steeple

What is the purpose of the steeple illustration if there is no associated tagging?--InsertUser (talk) 18:38, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

The page says "Typical values", i.e. the list of values for the key "bell_tower" is not limited. If you feel the need to specify the type of a steeple, go ahead. --Polarbear w (talk) 21:15, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

My feeling is that a steeple is typically not an aspect of something that has been tagged with man_made=tower. It is rather a building:part=* - and indeed building:part=tower (which might be combined with tower:type=bell_tower) and building:part=bell_tower are in use, and you can find quite a number of instances on taginfo, see https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/building%253Apart=tower and https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/building%3Apart=bell_tower . Appropriate values of bell_tower=* could be combined with these tags. This should also work for bell-gables that are not stand-alone structures. --Biff (talk) 12:29, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
