Difference between width=* and maxwidth:physical=*

I think I understand the difference between the maxwidth:physical=* and maxwidth=* keys, namely that the maxwidth=* key is the legally or visually indicated maximum width of the way/feature whereas the maxwidth:physical=* is the real maximum width as measured on foot. However, I feel like none of the pages cover the inconsistency of the width=* key which seems to cover similar kinds of cases. If I use the width=* key, should I not use the maxwidth:physical=* key? And for the same case, should I use the maxwidth=* key in combination with the width=* key? Has this question already been asked and answered? Thanks!--IanVG (talk) 15:20, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

For barriers, there's a clear difference. For example, a barrier=bollard could be 30 cm wide but allow vehicles up to, say, 2 m width to pass next to it. For roads, I guess that the road's width and the maximum width of a vehicle travelling it will indeed often be about identical. --Tordanik 20:50, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
