Duplicate tag?

How does this differ from railway:ref=*? It just seems like a UK specific version of a much more popular tag that has been more heavily used historically. Usage charts: railway:ref, ref:crs. --InsertUser (talk) 02:34, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Shown as "imported". It's clearer when it shows the basis from Computer Reservation System explicitly. On the contrary, OpenRailwayMap/Tagging#Operator_boundary already have the case of railway:ref:*=* that would be simply ref:*=* for other features.
I don't like railway:ref=* honestly. Meaningless prefix. In fact, ref:*=* should be correct here, together with NLC. It is used for ticketing, and is public facing. railway:ref=* should be used for Tiploc and Stanox codes that are internal following the definition, if anything. The former is available as StopClassification/OffStreet/Rail/AnnotatedRailRef/TiplocRef in the same source NaPTAN/Tag_mappings#Railway_Stations as this being StopClassification/OffStreet/Rail/AnnotatedRailRef/CrsRef/ . Again, this shows the need to differentiate different codes, that would not be achieved by useless railway:ref=* prefix alone.
