What happened to wholesale=only and what is the replacement

A few years ago someone from Germany (User:Geozeisig) changed this page from specifying a general tag for all kinds of wholesale business, to a subtag of pseudo-wholesale shops that generally cater to the public via various schemes such as "memberships" or big building supply shops with discount options for professionals. This German user's edit elevated an old abandoned proposal to be the new definition, but didn't state why he did so.

So this is a chance for someone to explain 1. Why this was done and was somehow a good thing. 2. How actual  Wholesaling business should now be tagged (old specification said to tag as shop=*shop=product and wholesale=only). Jbohmdk (talk) 23:44, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
