Talk:Mapping addresses as separate nodes or by adding to building polygons
Early hand edits that are no longer needed
Often there are several buildings people have added address tags to.
Then along comes an import of several million address nodes from government databases.
Now people regret having added those address tags by hand as the giant import has made them irrelevant and they are also a hassle to maintain and conflate.
But they cannot be removed due to "removing data from the map" rules.
Come to think about it, addresses are issued by the government. Not like how land owners can choose how in their parking lot to paint parking spaces.
If I were in charge, I would flip a switch: "Were sorry, the field you are trying to edit contains addr:, those have been locked for the entire country, per orders by Jidanni (talk). We're only accepting imports of at least 1000 nodes. So perhaps go edit a lemonade stand instead. :-)"
The earlier an import occurs, the less people would feel the urge to make hard-to-maintain address edits. Less later headaches for everyone. Jidanni (talk) 11:17, 13 December 2025 (UTC)
