What this page provides that the wiki user list doesn't

Doesn't MediaWiki have an automatic page of links to registered users? Special:Listusers?

Yes, plus the Recent changes page tells you who have been actively involved lately. The current page cannot age gracefully, which should become painfully obvious within a few months. --LA2 18:10, 25 Aug 2005 (BST)
No, the Recent Changes page only tells you who has been active *on the wiki*. If you can make mediawiki hook into subversion (for code), and the mailing list, and the OSM database itself, *then* this page will be redundant. It's far from optimal, but it's better than the wiki people list in my opinion. There's involved, and then there's *involved*. Mediawiki isn't psychic. --TomC 10:00, 26 Aug 2005 (BST)
Some observations on the above points:
  • Aging gracefully: if each user who adds an entry to People involved page would date his/her entry (by typing ~~~~~), then people could easily see the freshness of each entry without having to slog through the edit history.
  • I went ahead and added a request at the top of the page for contributors to date their entries. If someone gets motivated, he/she could slog through the edit history and date each existing entry.
  • Changes on the wiki not representing changes to the overall OSM project: the limiting factor in many free software projects is documentation, so it would be desirable if everyone who is building something (or is aware of something being built but not publicized by someone else) would use the wiki to tell others about it. Old discussion (2006!) The page no longer has an actual list on it. -- Harry Wood (talk) 22:20, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

Out of date ill-conceived list

It might be nice to have a round-up of some of the key people in OSM with descriptions and mugshots so we know who we are meeting when we meet them. Of course these people are a too modest to promote themselves on a page like this, so it would probably have to be written as kind of testimonial by someone who knows who the key people are and what they contribute. ...on the other hand maybe the implication that the project has a hierarchy of leaders is something to be avoided.

I guess the big contributors should all be awarded "stars" too...

As a start, can we do an annotated version of the SOTM group pic (i.e. an imagemap with names for each face)? --Richard 11:14, 27 July 2007 (BST)

OK I've deleted the list of people on this page. It was out-of-date. It did mention a few key players but also seemed to invite anyone random bozo to come along and add their name, which is frankly a ridiculous idea. We have a community of 100000 registered users. What's the entry criteria for this list? Whoever happens to find it? Whoever wants to promote themselves? As I mentioned before, a set of testimonials written by someone who knows, might work better. -- Harry Wood 12:06, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Cleanup Request

Hi, this page doesn't seem to contain the concrete contacts somebody expects, that comes from the linked pages. How can we change this? Is there another up-to-date page showing all responsible people? --!i! 18:53, 19 August 2010 (BST)

Merge (delete) this page

A page called Contributors was set up a few years back. Similar sort of meaning of the page title at least. In the meantime this page has been largely de-linked and forgotten about in the past five years. I propose we delete it. Just redirect to Contributors -- Harry Wood (talk) 22:27, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

DONE. redirected -- Harry Wood (talk)
