How does this differ from barrier=toll_booth?

This doesn't seem to differentiate from barrier=toll_booth very much (although I do agree that the word choice seems to be poor). IMO, the point of these "barriers" is the toll itself and not necessarily the fact that one must stop for it. As far as payment is concerned, I'd prefer to see something along the lines of "payment=ezpass" or similar along with the toll=* tag. --Sparks (talk) 22:34, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Hey Sparks, thanks for commenting!
The problem that this tag is trying to solve is its effect on routing software as explained in the rationale subsection. If you'll recall: "Many current routing softwares add a delay to trip time when encountering the tag barrier=toll_booth. However, the delay on these more modern toll collection systems is significantly less; not requiring the driver to stop in most cases. In effect, this means that many drivers will be routed onto a slower route. Using a different tag combination can prevent this as the tolling system continues to become more prevalent." Whereas a toll might be a deterrent for a driver to go a certain route, a toll gantry is not a physical barrier in the middle of the road. In the current tagging scheme, there is no way for routing software to know if there is physical barrier or not. Therefore, it will add a delay regardless. The current tagging scheme needs to change if we want people to be able to get the fastest route when they need it, while still marking the beginning of the toll road.
I agree that at sometime in the future it would be helpful to add the different accepted payment methods. However, the barrier issue is definitely something that must be changed to lay a foundation for that. On a side note, most of these gantries take pictures of the cars' license plates, simply requiring the driver to visit a website to pay the toll at a later time. Therefore, whatever brand of transponder they read is definitely tertiary and might become even less important. --Spuddy93 (talk) 23:11, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I missed that part of the proposal. I think this makes sense, then. --Sparks (talk) 00:10, 6 September 2018 (UTC)
