Kindergartens and colleges

Is it OK to use this tag for kindergarten and college buildings, too? --Wuzzy (talk) 00:01, 29 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

No, it seems that building=kindergarten and building=college are used instead. — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 00:29, 29 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Building name and School names

Schools have names and often times school buildings also have names. Currently I great an area for the school and tag it amenity=school and name=<name of school>. School buildings inside I then tag building=school (as suggested for classroom buildings) and then I stick the building name inside of name=<building name>. It is the last think I'm unsure of, it might be mistaken for the name of the a school instead. Maybe be should clarify whether this is the preferred way to do it?!

That sounds pretty good. I guess there might be some room for confusion if people are only looking at the buildings' names, but most schools I've mapped it really is quite apparent so I wouldn't say it's a huge problem.

building isn't for usage

the whole page seems wrong as it describe that the buiding describe the usage, nor what it look like. an active school is described by amenity, not building. a school may be in a building of any appearance (including buildings of a residential appearance) Marc marc (talk)

What if it's a school building (originally built as school) that eventually changed usage to something else? For instance the abandoned schools in villages, which sometimes are taken over by local associations to host museums or community offices.--Jimkats (talk) 15:30, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
A building originally constructed as a school building should still be tagged as building=school. The current use of the building may differ, which is tagged using building:use=public, building:use=museum, etc. The actual POI including contact information is then tagged as amenity=community_centre, tourism=museum, etc. Oivo357 (talk) 19:15, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
