Seems it is also used on sidepaths sometimes

This tag was documented as "Used for pedestrian paths not linked to roads" from previous "Meaning unclear", and further claims "This is in contrast to footway=sidewalk" in this wiki edit.

While it seems plausible that it perhaps might be one of the meanings, as discovered in this StreetComplete discussion comment, with more examples below it, it seems there are different meanings intended by different mappers which are in conflict with that definition. More research is needed to determine what is actually intended by footway=path. --mnalis (talk) 13:10, 13 September 2024 (UTC)

I've did the research and showcased that most usages are within the definition, except one cluster in the US by an inactive user.

I've asked a mapper in the area to resolve this conflict.
