Make tag more specific

Don't we want to separate benches that just have an inscription from benches with sculptures on it?

Let us consider two examples from the page:

Error creating thumbnail: historic=memorial
memorial=bench
amenity=bench
Error creating thumbnail: historic=memorial
memorial=bench
amenity=bench
inscription=In memory of Elmer Scott

Maybe it will be better to use additional memorial=sculpture or artwork_type=sculpture for the first example and just inscription=* for the second example? Enzet (talk) 22:10, 9 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Why? In the first example you can tag it also as historic=memorial+memorial=sculpture because the whole construction is a sculpture. Where do you want to use other tags if this is one object? The second bench could be also tagged as amenity=bench+inscription=* without treating it as a memorial. maro21 22:30, 9 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you're right, I figured it out. In both cases, we can use alternative tags. Thank you! Enzet (talk) 23:00, 9 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
For the first one, 3 values are actually possible: memorial=bench, memorial=statue or memorial=sculpture but I would give priority to memorial=bench. Because such benches (at least in Poland) are usually with a statue, and with memorial=sculpture I tag memorials which don't fit to any better category. maro21 23:14, 9 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Should amenity=bench be required rather than a useful combination?

Are there any circumstances in which a memorial=bench would not also be an amenity=bench? --Rskedgell (talk) 14:08, 23 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
