roof:direction

Where the information about roof:direction came from? I don't think that is correct: side_hipped is basically like gabled but with a hipped side added. In gabled type roof:direction=* indicates one of the two directions of the roof surfaces and the same should be here. The third hipped side is more likely corresponding with the roof:orientation=* indication. Please look at the two pages carefully. No, that doesn't work like that. A software wouldn't care about the nearby buildings, only rendering the one currently being processed by itself. In your picture, the leftmost and the rightmost buildings are narrower along the ridge than it is across the ridge, while the middle buildings are longer along the ridge. This necessitates different roof:orientation values (remember, this tag describes the orientation of the ridge, not of the roof surfaces). However, we still have to state that the left building has its hipped side directed away from the other buildings and not towards them (yes, it's unlikely that anyone would build it the other way, but physically it's possible, and we have to state that explicitly), and this is where roof:direction comes along. So this picture has to be described like this:

• on the middle two buildings: roof:shape=gabled, roof:orientation=along, [roof:direction unnecessary]
• on the rightmost building: roof:shape=gabled, roof:orientation=across, [roof:direction unnecessary]
• on the leftmost building: roof:shape=side_hipped, roof:orientation=across, roof:direction=around 300
