Difference from route=motorboat and route=canoe?

It appears that route=motorboat and route=waterway are quite similar: the first is defined as a "Signed recreational motorboat route" and the second as a "A signed route for motorboats and ships along a navigable waterway", but there is no clear definition given for what distinguishes a ship from a motorboat. Yes, they are being used differently. route=motorboat is used specifically for routes that are signed explicitly for small recreational crafts (in CEVNI-definitions: "small craft" : vessel with a hull less than 20 m long / <20 meter / “sports or pleasure craft” : any vessel used for purposes of sports and recreation and not financial gain. (Ship in OSM refers to commercial vessels)

route=waterway refers -as far as I can tell- to a wider scope of vessels and these routes are much more aimed large and commercial vessels (although some routes are also aimed at recreational vessels or sailboats travelling by motor that need a large clearance height.
