shop=alcohol better

I would expect wine shops to be covered by shop=alcohol.

The tag docs for shop=alcohol were somewhat muddled for a long time, by the older tag shop=beverages, which created a lingering confusing around "government licensed" in the definition. Hopefully its getting clearer now. ...but adding this shop=wine page feels like a step backwards.

It's a tag which is in use though, so from that point of view it's not a bad idea, but I think we should point people clearly at shop=alcohol, and this should de-listed from Map Features.

I don't really have a strong opinion. I created this page because the tag was in use and I wanted to document it, not necessarily because I agree with its use.
I think that in England, a shop like Majestic Wine (shop=wine) is quite different from a typical off-license (shop=alcohol), so I can understand why people tag them differently. On the other hand, merging both tags might make simplify things.
Best to also discuss this on the tag mailing list, hardly any people follow the discussion pages on the wiki. Math1985 (talk) 00:40, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
IMHO these are 2 different types of shops, in wine shops, you will find only or mostly wine, and usually wine experts that sell it, while an alcohol shop is a shop you will typically find in areas where the use of alcohol is restricted, like in some muslim countries or in the US, and they will not focus particularly on wine. The wine shop is often a kind of “wine deli”, the alcohol shop is more like a tobacco shop or a weapon shop. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 20:55, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
I agree, in Spain you can buy wine in many places from gas stations to supermarkets, but there are special shops that sell wine and offer expert assessment about it. As opposite, I've never seen a shop that only sells water. --Robertogeb (talk) 19:09, 7 March 2021 (UTC)
