Is there a non-cement based concrete? Would it be tagged differently? Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:36, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
- Technically, according to wikipedia, yes. Apart from "cement concrete" (surface=concrete), most commonly known is asphalt concrete, usually shortened to just "asphalt" (or tarmac). That one is obviously mapped differently, as surface=asphalt. There is however also polymer concrete which probably might often also be mapped as surface=concrete (or as surface=paving_stones, depending on the format). Wikipedia above also mentiones other types... --mnalis (talk) 20:16, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
Stamped concrete?
In some Mediterranean countries it seems common to create roads out of concrete, but shape the concrete to look like paving stones or cobble stone. I believe this is called “stamped concrete”. It seems to be used mainly on residential streets with little traffic, especially in historic neighbourhoods. It feels wrong to tag this as concrete, as that raises the expectation of a smooth surface, but it also feels wrong to tag it as sett or paving_stones, as that does not represent reality. I’m tending towards tagging it as the latter and adding a note, as for users of the road it does not make a difference whether the cobblestones are real or fake. surface=concrete:stamped (but I don't like surface=concrete:*val-suffixing) - There's
paving_stones:pattern=*andsett:pattern=*, sosurface:concrete=*can haveconcrete:pattern=paving_stones/surface:pattern=paving_stones? Kovposch (talk) 07:45, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
