TODO

The Budapest XI district ortophoto 2017 was taken at a very fortunate time in early spring when only a handful of trees and scrubs blossomed. You can easily classify two very useful kinds of trees solely based on the flower color, density, branch structure, the tree shape and shadows. I've validated with manual surveying that the predicted species of the attached ground truth pictures indeed match their appearance. Hence I started tagging future predictions that we can validate next summer.

There exists a similar German movement to map edible fruit trees, however their data is not ODbL:

Prunus cerasifera

This is an ornamental tree producing small edible spherical fruit. The yellow fruit variety tastes very sweet, while the red and blue ones have less flavor, but keep for longer.

Tags I use:

  • fixme="predicted based on xi-orto-2017"
  • natural=tree
  • taxon="Prunus cerasifera" (note that there exist numerous varieties of cherry plum, however the most common in Hungary are the red, yellow and small blue fruit variety, very close in appearance, unlike the purple leaved ones)
  • taxon:en="cherry plum"
  • taxon:genus=Prunus

Prunus dulcis

Beware that most of the wild growing almonds that I have encountered taste very bitter. If this relates to the exact species, a taxonomical refinement will be needed in the future.

Tags I use:

  • fixme="predicted based on xi-orto-2017"
  • natural=tree
  • taxon="Prunus dulcis" (although I have a feeling that the slightly different flower colors and branch structure could indicate different almond species, this should be close enough for most purposes)
  • taxon:en=almond
  • taxon:genus=Prunus
