STATUES
Ideas
Put things together
There's a need to organize and group the different types of statues.
Back to Art
What is a statue?
- a type of sculpture.
- in 3 dimensions (full-round) unlike "high-reliefs" and "low-reliefs"
- a medium-sized sculpture that represents a human, a deity or an animal.
- "medium" means equal to or greater than half the natural size (of a human), below this half it is a statuette or a figurine.
- It's possible to classify it by "genre" (ex: nude) and "style" (combination of visual elements, techniques and methods) like classic, renaissance, modern ....
In OpenStreetMap
So it's a bit different.
We have "artwork_type=statue" used for figurative works and "artwork_type=sculpture" which is recommended for non-figurative works
And we have 3 different ways to map the statues because we distinguish between "memorial" ones (small and large) and "non-memorial" ones.
Which give :
- artwork_type=statue + statue=*
- memorial=statue + statue=*
- monument=statue + statue=*
Classification
First we need to avoid having a huge list of statue=* :
- statue=name 1
- statue=name 2
- statue=name 3
- ...
You can imagine with the Hindu pantheon which has 330 million gods !
In my opinion, we should use some "kind of statue" categories to put information in this tag.
For example in the current wiki page we have:
- statue=virgin (Mary)
- statue = saint
- statue = buddha
In fact these three statues have something in common, they are linked to religion !
So "statue=religion" would be better than "statue=buddha"
Buddha should be in the name=*
And in the future, "statue=religion" might be refined with "religion=*" and maybe even more information.
Research
So I tried to find "kinds of statues" based as much as possible on artistic criteria.
For example "statue=equestrian" wasn't very hard to find because it's a well-documented style of statue.
So you will find below:
1/ A table which is a summary with all "statue=*" tags with a small comment.
2/ Followed by three tables with visual examples for artworks, memorials and monuments.
Good reading !

Types de monuments
FR
Attention !

Monument types
It is possible to define about twelve different types of commemorative "monuments" :

The heights of the examples given below are in meters (without the base / pedestal for the statues).
