Cross-border cities

I recommend also adding:

  • Amarillo, TX
  • Dodge City, KS
  • Wichita, KS
  • Topeka, KS
  • Joplin, MO
  • Fayetteville/Springdale, AR
  • Fort Smith, AR
  • Texarkana, AR
  • Dallas, TX
  • Wichita Falls, TX
  • Taos, NM (this is the reason for extending US-412 west of Guymon, OK)
  • Albuquerque, NM

Other suggested changes:

  • The justification for US-54 being trunk should be Albuquerque to Wichita rather than Tucumcari to Wichita. Since Tucumcari isn't a trunk city in the New Mexico guideline, we shouldn't promote it here.
  • US-81 Enid to Bowie, TX seems suspect here. Bowie is not on the list for trunk cities on the Texas draft proposal. I-35 appears to be the favored routing between Enid and Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, TX goes via Interstate only. IMO US-81 is a weak case for trunk.
  • The justification for US-69 being trunk should be the routing Dallas, TX -> Muskogee, OK -> Joplin, MO. Denison, TX and Big Cabin, OK are smaller towns that aren't on the trunk list.
  • US-75 should be justified as Tulsa to Topeka, KS on the north side. I'm not sure how we justify US-75 south of Tulsa, so we'll need to look at what significant locations are to the south of Tulsa and whether US-75 is the right routing for that.
  • US-259/US-59 routing should be Idabel to Fort Smith, AR which would be a justifiable trunk pair rather than Siloam Springs. This likely excludes the section of US-59 to the west and northwest of Fort Smith from trunk routing.

Taos, NM

I have revised the New Mexico guidelines to better harmonize with Oklahoma, particularly with US 412. They now include US 412 east from Clayton, NM in the trunk network.

After a discussion about this in Slack, there does not seem to be much interest among the New Mexico folks to extend the US 412 trunk classification to I 25, or the US 64 trunk classification east from Taos. For Santa Fe, the current trunk routing to Wichita adds about 11 miles to the trip compared to US 412/56 from Springer. Personally, I do not consider that reduction in distance significant enough to add another trunk route. The routers can figure out the shortcuts.

NM already has US 64 from Clayton to Raton in the trunk network. While NM does not consider Raton an important regional center (but Oklahoma does), this route connects Oklahoma with Pueblo, CO.
