Additional groups in data items
Hi! Your extended use of group (Q12) (e.g. new group suitable for children (Q23453)) and the use of additional (multiple) groups in data items (e.g. at Item:Q5011) isn't supported by the wiki pages, for now, IMHO. What is the intended application, or the underlying purpose? Just categorization within the wiki, or beyond the wiki? Could you provide some explanation? I suggest to discuss it at Talk:Wiki (the use of multiple groups in data items and the naming of groups in the form of short sentences like "suitable for ..."). The "traditional" way would be to manually add the tag pages to the desired categories. --Chris2map (talk) 10:58, 5 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi! I would like to work towards an extensive "OpenKidsMap", where one can query OSM for all features suitable for children (for a specified range). And for that I want to be able to query wikidata items to find all appropriate tags (and keys). I tried to mirror the wiki and data items information, as you told me the wiki is the primary source. Of the available wiki data properties, group is the (most) fitting way to categorize this kind of data, IMHO. I also noticed that multiple groups are not really picked up well by the wiki, so I made sure the last group in the list is the most appropriate for the Description templates. IMHO, multiple groups should be shown and automatically used by the wiki. Generally, for wikidata items, multiple groups definitely makes sense. --Zimtschnecke (talk) 12:41, 5 January 2026 (UTC)
rank of group entries in data items
Hi, I noticed you're changing ranks for "group" entries in data items (e.g. Special:Diff/2944880). What is your reason for this? --Chris2map (talk) 08:01, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi. If there are multiple groups with different ranks, only the preferred ranks are exported in the data item dumps. And as there is no (documented) use of ranks I slowly am removing ranks where I see them. --Zimtschnecke (talk) 09:14, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
- Few years ago there were more items with differences between the languages, not only with the images, but also with status, group, and applicabilities. That is that there were multiple and different entries. Many of them were copied from divergent language pages into the data items by a bot. Back then I started setting "preferred" rank for the "default English" entries to mark the actual / recent default and avoid popping up as "mismatched" for maintainance. I think it still makes sense to mark one as the superordinate entry (that is shown in the tag description infobox e.g.) if we want to use multiple entries with groups or others. --Chris2map (talk) 10:03, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
- Can the infobox be made to show the preferred rank group? I think now it just shows the last entry? Imho, all groups should be shown tho, same as with Category: links. --Zimtschnecke (talk) 12:58, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
