Summary
Boundaries mark the borders of areas, mostly political, but possibly also of other administrative areas.
The original accepted usage was to only apply this tag to areas (
) but not to linear ways (
). However there now seems to be a consensus in discusssion (See Talk:Key:boundary#Expanded usage) in favour of using the boundary key on linear ways, with relations used to aggregate these ways if needed.

Tag values
The following values are possible, though might be old due to the new admin_level tag
National
boundary=administrative, admin_level=2 marks country borders, such as the border between Austria and Germany. The names of the countries is specified through the tags "left:country", "right:country", if used on a linear way rather than an enclosed/area way.
There is some controversy about what is the exact meaning of country. For the sake of clarity, only political entities listed on the ISO 3166 standard are to be considered countries.
Country names are written in English.
Subnational
boundary=administrative marks subnational borders. The names of the subnational entities involved is specified as with national borders, with "parish", "district", "region", "province", "state"
border_type
Current import of US states has begun to use an extension, border_type=* to give the name of the boundary's type. Currently-known values are:
US
- state
- county
- township
- city
- village
These should give the legal status of the boundary. This may be different from the place=* value.
China
- province
- prefecture
- county
- township
admin_level
In order that different borders can be rendered consistently among countries, an 'admin_level' tag has been introduced (doing this based on border_type would require knowledge of their hierarchy in each country).
