Le tag boundary est utilisé pour marquer les limites de surfaces, la plupart politiques, mais aussi d'autres surfaces administratives.

À l'origine, ce tag était seulement applicable à des surfaces (), mais pas à des chemins (). Cependant, il semble y avoir à présent un consensus en cours de discussion (voir Talk:Key:boundary#Expanded usage) en faveur de l'utilisation de ce tag sur des chemins. Dans ce cas, des relations sont utilisées pour agréger ces chemins si nécessaire.

Valeurs du tag

Les valeurs suivantes sont possibles, bien qu'elles puissent se révéler un peu désuètes depuis le nouveau tag admin_level.

National

boundary=administrative, admin_level=2 indique les frontières entre les pays, telles que celle entre l'Autriche et l'Allemagne par exemple. Le nom des pays est indiqué grâce aux tags "left:country" et "right:country", s'ils sont utilisés sur un chemin plutôt que sur une surface fermée.

Il existe quelques controverses à propos du sens exact du terme de pays. Pour plus de clareté, seules les entités politiques listées dans le standard ISO 3166 sont considérées comme des pays.

Les noms de pays sont écrits en anglais.

Subnational

boundary=administrative indique les limites sous-nationales. Le nom des entités sous-nationales impliquées est inscrit de la même façon que les frontières du pays, avec "parish" (paroisse), "district", "region", "province", "state" (État).

border_type

L'import sous OSM des États des USA a fait usage de l'extension border_type=* pour donner un nom aux types de limites. Les valeurs connues actuellement sont :

Elles devraient indiquer le statut légal des limites. Elles peuvent être différentes des valeurs de place=*.

admin_level

Afin que les différentes limites puissent être affichées de manière uniforme quel que soit le pays, un tag 'admin_level' a été créé.
