Proposal

It is proposed to add information whether a toilet has menstrual products available (for free). It is to be used on the amenity=toilet node. This proposal is partly based on Proposal:Free period products. I proposes the usage of the tag

toilets:menstrual_products=yes/no/limited

which describes if menstrual products are available (yes) or available in some way (limited). Yes and limited should only be used if products are available for free, similar to toilet paper.

Rationale

Relevance

The availability of period products that are provided similar to toilet paper is relevant for people on their period. While for some toilets there can be an expectation that they are available (e.g. government buildings in some countries/areas) for most others this is unclear unless mapped. Therefore including information on availability is relevant.

Alternatives

The vending machine option is not an adequate solution as a) vending machine can be misleading in many cases where period products are provided in a different manner b) this option is harder to map correctly. The difference here is similar to something like drinking_water which is used for toilets and is different from a vending machine that provides drinking water. Vending machines that have period products may still be mapped separately.

Tag values

While the term period products covers a wide range of items (tampons, pads, menstrual cups and period panties) toilets will likely only provide tampons and pads. This tag should be set to "yes" even if only one type of product is available as the range of possible different items is large (size/absorbency capacity of tampons and pads, features like tampon applicators etc..) and we can therefore not properly map if an exact type of product is there but the information will still be useful to most.

Limited should be used when period products are only available on certain toilets (e.g. female-only stalls). The reasoning for this is very similar, there is a large variance of bathroom configurations and it wouldn't be feasible to map this more granular.

If menstrual products are available, but not for free then other tags such as Tag:vending=feminine hygiene should be used.

Tagging

Proposed is the use of

toilets:menstrual_products=yes/no/limited

to indicate the availability of menstrual products.

Tagging should be only done on

Applies to

Definition

Any menstrual products that are available at a toilet free of charge. It can include dispensers outside a toilet (e.g. in a corridor before the toilet) if the relation to the toilet is very clearly given and therefor menstrual products are de-facto available.

Examples that should be tagged

Examples of period products provided:

Example of mapping: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/243741646#map=19/48.78210/8.52079

Examples that should NOT be tagged

Vending machines that sell menstrual products inside a toilet facility or provide menstrual products paid or free outside of toilets facilities. The existing vending=feminine_hygiene should be used

Rendering

Information could be shown when clicking on toilets. Developers can choose if they want to group the limited/yes option together into a general marker of availability

  • I abstain from voting but have comments I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. In my opinion, a more rigorous definition of `limited' should be chosen. I would think that the variety of products being dispensed would be more important than the question whether they are only available in a certain stall. However, this proposal has much less `resolution' in mapping the former (because only yes/no can be used here) than for the latter (because `limited' can also be applied). --Pi11 (talk) 18:55, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, whether it is variety or quantity restrictions is also critical (for example, in my living area, supply is often cut off or no one maintains it) --快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 12:43, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. providing menstrual products is not a feature of a toilet and can change att any monment. Furthermore are their often restrictions allowing diffrent group of people to use them. Like my hometown is distributing them only to pupils studing att the local schools or univeristy - and exclude visitors and "normal" womens. But they are freee to use the toilet. In order to get that right it is nessary to have to diffrent mapping objects. --Skinfaxi (talk) 12:47, 27 January 2024 (UTC)
  • I abstain from voting but have comments I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. I'd love to fully support it, but I think the values are too confusing (I should have engaged earlier, I know, mea culpa.) I'd prefer free/ no/ limited/ fee. I'm afraid that yes will be used in those cases where vending machines are in place. In addition to the previous vote, maybe permissive would be acceptable for tagging. --B-unicycling (talk) 13:35, 27 January 2024 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. (prefer yes, but I think this would be better and we may need another proposal in the future) I'm not opposed to adding such tags, in fact I think it's great (either documenting them on maps or in reality the government providing them). It's just that @Skinfaxi: and I may have the same point of view. Maybe it would be better to not only adding this in toilet but for a new separate amenity=* tagged feature? --快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 12:43, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
like node/11535041288 already using vending=menstrual_products --快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 12:47, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, I want to change my mind after reading the other votes. I chose to change it to no, even though it doesn't seem to have any effect. --快乐的老鼠宝宝 (talk) 06:26, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. I agree this is important information, but why is it restricted to toilets? My university is distributing tampons for free outside the toilet at the student's service center. I would like data consumers to know they can get their tampons here, but if this proposal is accepted, I would have to use a different tag which will probably not be taken into consideration by data consumers. I don't think it's a good idea to restrict the offering of free menstrual products to toilets. --Ceyu (talk) 19:51, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. per Ceyu. --Nw520 (talk) 22:34, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
  • I oppose this proposal I oppose this proposal. This proposal has formal errors ("Proposal" section). First, I don't agree that this tag could only be used with the deprecated amenity=toilet tag. Second, why only on nodes? Sometimes toilets can be mapped as areas. Third, why the value of "no"? If we approve this value, it can be added to millions of toilets where these products are not present (and in 99.99% of toilets they are not present). Fourth, the tag should also be used not only in connection with toilets, but also other places, so it should rather be "menstrual_products=*" - there is no need for a complex key, because "menstrual products" are not a feature of toilets (such as "toilets:disposal" or "toilets:position"). maro21 23:39, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
