The building:use=* key describes what kind of function a building=* serves. This tag can be handy when the form or original purpose of a building differs from its present use.
Mapping
For example, if a warehouse building serves as a residence, then you could tag it:
building=warehousebuilding:use=residential
In fact, there are many examples in the real world where the original building was re-purposed. Dormitory used as apartment building:
building=dormitorybuilding:use=apartments
Description of the function in combination with another main tag
The function of a building can usually be expressed by combining building=* with other common tags, such as amenity=*, shop=*, or tourism=*. Imagine a church building used as a library:
Buildings with multiple functions
The tag building:use=multipurpose is in use to describe a building that has multiple different functions. Some users also use multiple values, such as residential;commercial—though usually only when there are no more than two functions.
However, if there is a clear primary function, this should be used as the value—as is the case when tagging buildings themselves.
