The key is used to clarify the farming technique in use when it cannot be inferred from the crop. In particular, certain crops like rice and tea may be grown using a variety of land preparations and equipment.
When not to use
landuse=paddy was proposed for farmland that has been prepared for growing rice in a submerged field; however, rice is not exclusively grown on paddies (it may also be grown in an ‘upland’ fashion on a dry farmland=field or a farmland=terraced slope. Paddies may also be used for crops other than rice, such as crop=taro, and so using a subtag is favoured over creating a new landuse (see discussion).
farmland=pasture has been used, but landuse=meadow is the standard tag for meadows / pastures.
farmland=wetland has been used together with crop=rice (mainly in Japan) to indicate a paddy, however the term ‘wetland’ indicates a natural feature (natural=wetland) not a cultivated one. In this case, farmland=paddy should be used instead. It has alos been used in England to indicate wetland attached to a farm, but this sort of area should normally be tagged with natural=wetland combined with the managed=* tag.
farmland=arable is redundant since landuse=farmland is normally only used for land that can be cultivated.
farmland=plant_nursery should be changed to the widespread landuse=plant_nursery tag instead.
Most other low-use values for this tag are similar to plant_nursery in that there is a more widespread tag already documented and in use. Please look up alternatives before using this tag.
Values
The following have proposed uses which are not clearly defined elsewhere.
| Tag | Meaning |
|---|---|
farmland=field
|
The most widespread farming method with crops grown on uncovered tilled land, usually in rows. This is the default meaning of landuse=farmland for most taggers. Use when the crop or produce would otherwise suggest another farming method, but a plain field is used instead.
|
farmland=paddy
|
A field prepared for growing semi-aquatic crops. This is the most well-known way of growing rice where walls coupled with irrigation ditches are used to flood the field during the growing season, then drain during the harvest and off seasons. (Another way is upland rice which is grown on dry fields or terraces.) Some paddies may be used for crops normally grown on fields (especially as part of crop rotation), but this tag is primarily concerned with how the farmland has been shaped rather than the crop grown on it.
Normally implied by |
farmland=terraced
|
A group of stacked, narrow, step-like fields on a steep hill or mountainside. Mainly used in Nepal where the farming_system tag is used to indicate the primary harvesting methods. Depending on the area and how each terrace is prepared and accessed, it may be preferrable to outline each plot of a terrace separately along with a more specific tag in order to provide more detail.
