level:ref=* is used to specify the reference number, code or symbol of the level where an object is located, using the locally common method of indicating a specific floor. Particularly useful where levels are not referred to by numbers but by codes (level:ref=A) or by names. Typically found on elevator buttons and way-finding signage.

This tag is part of the Simple Indoor Tagging scheme "SIT".

Similar tags

There are some similar tags: The address tag addr:floor=* has a very similar meaning. While for some objects using address tags would be weird, the level:ref=* tag can be used everywhere (but does not bear address semantics explicitly).

See also level=* from the simple indoor tagging scheme, which describes a logical level and may differ from how levels are locally called. It generally assumes that ground floor is level=0 and the first floor above ground is level=1. Usage in practice sometimes differs, what would be considered a mistake by some mappers. Also the question of intermediate floors is not complete clear (some variants use rational numbers like 0.5).

In simple cases level=* and level:ref=* may be the same, in other cases they may differ, for example a building with level LG (lower ground) as the lowest ground entrance level, followed by level G (ground), followed by level 1, would be,

level=* level:ref=*
level=0 level:ref=LG
level=1 level:ref=G
level=2 level:ref=1
