In contrast to source=*, which holds a description of the source of data, source_ref=* is used to link to an external source of information.
For example, it can be used to link to a photo that was used to tag the object, see Photo_mapping#Tagging_and_storage.
The tag is sometimes combined with a subkey to link the source of data in a specific key of the object, such as source_ref:name=* for the source of the name of the object.
Comparison to 'source' of a changeset
If a certain source is used for all changes in a changeset, consider using the source tag of the Changeset instead. The advantage of a tag on the changeset is that it is immediately clear exactly which changes to an object were done using this source. If several people edit an object from different sources, a tag on the object might not be precise enough.
