Use education=folk_high_school to identify a folk high school, a type of boarding school for adults offering a non-formal education where learning is based on personal interests and voluntary participation. These institutions are known locally as højskole (Denmark), folkhögskola (Sweden), folkehøgskole (Norway), and fólkaháskúli (Faroe Islands).
Folk high schools usually have no exams and no formal admission requirements, although some award a certificate of attendance. The aim of a folk high school is not to provide academic qualifications but to support personal development, general education, and community life. The tradition originates in Denmark and is inspired by the ideas of N. F. S. Grundtvig, who emphasized lifelong learning and enlightenment over formal credentials.
Course lengths at the Danish folk high schools vary from a few weeks to several months: shorter summer courses tend to attract participants of all ages, while the longer stays, typically held in winter, are most often attended by young adults in their early twenties. The minimum age for students is 17½.[1]
Today, there are around 70 folk high schools in Denmark, but similar institutions based on the same principles can also be found in several neighboring countries.
How to map
Folk high schools typically occupy a large area, so it is recommended to create an area around the entire campus with the education=folk_high_school tag, plus a name=* tag at least. For a more complex multi-site facility then ideally it will be mapped using a multipolygon. If the area of the folk high school is uncertain or cannot yet be mapped precisely, it is also possible to use a node near the center of the folk high school and tag it with education=folk_high_school. There should not be both a node and an area with the same tags.
The key education=* is still supposed to used along with the more common amenity=* key until a time when it's decided that the use of the education=* tags have reached a critical mass and all duplicate amenity=* tags can be removed. Before the education=* key was introduced, folk high schools were typically simply tagged as a amenity=school or amenity=college. One of these tags should also be added, for now.
