flow_direction=both can be used to indicate that the flow direction of a waterway or the content of a pipeline can be reversed. In the case of pipelines this happens by means of control systems, while in the case of waterways there may be various natural or man-made reasons for this.

One possible cause is tidal influence, which, depending on local conditions, can be noticeable in tributaries up to several dozen kilometers inland. For drainage/irrigation ditches in completely flat surrounding areas, the flow direction can temporarily reverse if the inflow/outflow is controlled by sluice gates. Another example is streams that are connected to an estavelle .

How to map

Add flow_direction=both to the affected section of a waterway=* or a man_made=pipeline. If the change of flow direction of a tributary is caused by tidal influence, add tidal=yes. For tidal channels being part of tidal flats use waterway=tidal_channel instead.
