This tag is for a route relation representing a BIA Road (also known as an Indian Reservation Road), a road route on or near Indian reservations in the United States that is maintained as part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Road System. This system is funded by the Tribal Transportation Program (historically known as the Indian Reservation Roads Program), which is jointly administered by the BIA and the Federal Highway Administration.
Where to find them
A BIA Road is generally found within an Indian reservation boundary (boundary=aboriginal_lands or boundary=indigenous_administration), but on occasion it may be an access road leading to a reservation or, in some states, a road often used by a federally recognized tribe.
Every BIA-funded road or bridge is tracked in the National Tribal Transportation Facility Inventory (NTTFI) under a Freedom of Information Act request. You can verify the existence of a numbered BIA Road by referencing the relevant regional NTTFI report, cross-referencing the FHWA document "Identification Codes for Tribal Governments". For example, if the Location column reads "A01340 Rt 0111/10" [1], it represents section 10 of Indian Reservation Route 111 on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (340) in BIA Agency 1 of the BIA Great Plains Region (A). How to map
Many routes are marked with signs bearing the BIA's standard arrowhead shield. In Arizona, a subset of major highways through reservations are designated as Indian Routes and marked by a state-specific design. Some tribal governments also designate and post their own tribal routes based on their own designs, as reported in the NTTFI. [3]
