This tag indicates that a route relation is part of Florida's state road system. The state road number is given as a bare number in ref=*. For example, State Road A1A is tagged route=road network=US:FL ref=A1A.

For backwards compatibility, each member highway=* way is redundantly tagged with a ref=SR * tag, such as SR A1A. This is an intentionally human-readable tag that should only be displayed verbatim. Any data consumer that needs to do more, such as displaying a route shield, should consult the route relation.

History

Florida state roads originally carried ref=* tags beginning with SR. In 2016, mappers replaced this prefix with FL. In 2026, the local community decided to change it back to SR. [1]
