This tag indicates that a route relation is part of Indiana's state road system. The state road number is given as a bare number in ref=*. For example, State Road 165 is tagged route=road network=US:IN ref=165.

For backwards compatibility, each member highway=* way is redundantly tagged with a ref=SR * tag, such as SR 165. This is an intentionally human-readable tag that should only be displayed verbatim. Any data consumer that needs to do more, such as displaying a route shield, should consult the route relation.

History

Indiana state roads originally carried ref=* tags beginning with SR. Between 2012 and 2019, mappers haphazardly replaced this prefix with IN, but SR remained common in some parts of the state. Between 2018 and 2020, local mappers restored SR across the entire state.
