Opening ceremony (09:00 - 09:30)

Participants' projects (09:30 - 13:00)

Each participant briefly introduces the projects they are working on and talk about their experiences, plans and problems. Afterwards, we might (??) have a few minutes to discuss the different approaches and try to identify possibilities for collaboration, as well as future projects and applications.

Who is working on what tasks? What is redundant and can be outsourced as general service? How can others help? Wishlist, what do others miss in your tool?

3D OSM Discussion Sessions (14:00 - 18:30)

In the afternoon, we plan to have 3-4 discussion blocks about certain topics. They should each last about 1 hour and should be loosely chaired by a person with some experience in the field.

Proposed topics so far:

  • 3D Data Capturing (14:00 - 14:45, Chair: Marek Strassenburg-Kleciak, Matthias Uden)
Participants discuss approaches to crowdsourced 3D data collection.
Possible topics include:
  • Smartphone/Tablet tools, lasers, aerial imagery, image recognition, estimating known objects, ...
  • Height data capturing in general
  • Data structures (apart from tagging schema -> Sunday...)
  • What is the best way to capture facade structures, roof structures, other objects...
  • Using Bing birds-eye view? Drones, balloons, ...
  • Terrain, coastlines, landuse and derived objects/3D fillings
  • Digital Elevation Model, OpenDEM.info, high precision height data with low cost DGPS and GPS barometers
  • A quick introduction to Google Sketchup Photo Matching Tool by Vladimir Elistratov: how to reconstruct buildings from photos with Google Sketchup, how to derive building measurements from photos and how to use OSM plugin for Google Sketchup.
  • 3D Data Editing & Processing (14:45 - 15:45, Chair: Marek Strassenburg-Kleciak)
Participants discuss existing tools and ideas for making editing 3D data approachable for mappers.
Possible topics include:
  • Mapping tools for the community to edit 3D data
  • A good 3D OSM editor with a 3D attribute wizard enabling mappers to easily map 3D once a consensus on the tagging schema has been found?
  • A good mobile editor for tablets/smartphones with a 3D attribute wizard
  • Use of existing photogrammetric software, e.g. Autodesk 123D Catch, PhotoSynth et al.
  • Editor presets and plugins, stand-alone software projects
  • Interpolation and clever estimating parameters
  • The use of external 3D models (3D model repository)
  • What are requirements of our tools/possible contributors?
  • Repository of realistically looking textures for POV-Ray-based applications (e.g. a texture for asphalt roads, tracks, footways, water, buildings, etc)
  • Repository of bitmap textures (public domain licensed ?)

15:45 - 16:15: Coffee break

  • 3D Visualisation & Applications (16:15 - 17:15, Chair: Matthias M)
Participants discuss existing tools for 3D data visualisation as well as different applications of 3D OSM data.
Possible topics include:
  • What are specific plans/problems of existing viewers & applications?
  • Future applications, attraction of external people from e.g. 3D arts, 3D object fabbing, VR (as OpenSimulator, http://www.urbansim.org)
  • Algorithms and techniques:
    • How to combine SRTM and OSM data to get correct elevation profiles for 3D roads, buildings, forests, etc
    • How to draw roofs of Subtype 9
    • How to automatically position windows and doors for buildings
    • How to realistically represent millions of trees
  • Visions and strategic concepts (17:15 - 18:00, Chair: Marek Strassenburg-Kleciak)
Participants discuss wishful 3D aspects of planned API, put together ideas and results from previous discussion sessions:
  • From OpenStreetMap to "OpenWorldMap"? What is OSM4D?
  • Between GIS and CAD
  • Level Of Detail, Layers, Levels
  • Time aspects of reality
  • Communication & Infrastructure (18:00 - 18:30, Chair: Rainer Jochem)
Participants discuss methods for improving the communication between each other, i.e. between community and universities, between those people working on similar things etc.
Also, server infrastructures etc. can be discussed.
Possible topics include:
  • How to stay in contact, work in teams on certain topics, notify others about extended schemas
  • How can we all support single tools in the 3D OSM stack, how to divide work steps meaningfully and if possible avoid double work
  • How to properly document progress and share current issues between each other in all above fields? New Wiki pages etc.
  • Do we need centralized powerful equipment? assist by Wikipedia foundation?

Nothing specifically planned... Everyone is invited to have a drink at some kind of bar (See Marktplatz in Garching ;-))

Tagging consolidation I (09:00 - 12:30)

Starting from an overview of the current tagging situation, participants discuss the advantages of different tagging approaches, and try to reach a consensus on tagging conventions.

  • OSM tagging schemes, tag use matrix, ... -> unite basic tagging scheme and document it
    • How to deal with legacy taggin? What are defaults/fallbacks? Specification of datatypes for values? Ugly model examples?
    • Should we have a mini-mapping party to create a "showcase" area where the tagging is complete and complies with the proposed scheme?
  • New Tags / 3D Representations
    • Interesting but still not widely used objects for 3D representation (e.g. man_made=pipeline, ...)
    • How to avoid problems with classical 2D renderings
  • Cleanup/Refactoring of 3D-related Wiki pages, extract general information and immediately create Wiki pages for that

Participants make sure that the results of the workshop find their way into practice.

Tagging standards should be publicly documented. Required resources such as servers should be organized. Future communication should be planned. Most of that will probably not be finished at the workshop, but responsibilities for these tasks should be clear when we leave.
