  • Proposed as new amenity

Rationale

Amenities are something that people might search out. People may need to find a Veterinary Surgeon (vet) and so we should display them as an amenity. This would normally be a node, though some veterinary practices are large premises with stables and other buildings.

What about involving a part of the green cross logo section for medical practices generally (eg hospitals etc) - more intuitive and fits convention, just paws could be guessed as a pet shop/sanctuary. Breezer 19:06, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Discussion

  • In the US, this is better known as a Veterinarian, or sometimes Animal Hospital for more extensive facilities. I won't protest too much about just using amenity=veterinary if that's the consensus, though. --SiliconFiend 22:30, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Are these run like businesses? Often with a shelf of things to buy? Would shop=vet... and shop=kennel be acceptable? - LastGrape 23:07, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Hmm, a vet is basically an animal doctor so I think the issue is should they be regarded as a basic amenity like amenity=doctor (so amenity= vet | veterinary |veterinarian) or a more general local retail service for which the shop tag is intended. I'd personally go for the latter on the principle of few amenity values, many, many shop values. Any comments from mappers living in rural areas where the vet plays an important role? Lastly, I'd prefer the value to be just vet as it is easy, but I'm not sure how globally that would be understood. MikeCollinson 08:55, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
  • vet is a bit too short to be well understandable for us none englishman ;-) I guess the best will be to put it under amenity, just like all the proposals for medical services (e.g. amenity=doctors). I'm pretty unsure about veterinary vs. veterinarian. -- Ulfl 03:44, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
  • i'm english, and i'm not a fan of using vet, it's far too ambiguous and informal. i would stick with amenity, as vets are pretty important in farming areas, although i'm not too concerned - i regard a shop as a place for buying goods or services so a vet would also fit with that. This has been sitting here a long time now and would be a useful addition. Can I suggest that we simply go with amenity=veterinary as proposed? There seems to be consensus on using amenity=. I will vote for it. MikeCollinson 17:56, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
