Augusta county, Virginia, Address and Building Import is an import of Virginia Address Points and Microsoft/BuildingFootprints, covering Augusta County, Virginia. Addresses are complete, and were imported between 2022-05-18 and 2022-11-26. Buildings are pending, and will likely be a long term project.

Goals

Realizing the necessity of accurate and complete map data, the user of this account desires to improve OSM in Augusta county by maintaining up to date address points, driveways, & routes; so that OSM can be counted on as a dependable source of routing for everyone, specifically first responders.

Schedule

Background

Initial import of address points was performed between 2022 May 18 and 2022 Nov 26. Prior to this, very few addresses existed within Augusta county. Imports conflated the new address points with existing POIs and buildings. (Certainly there were mistakes and omissions with this.) Removed (and still removing) tiger:reviewed=no and access=private from most driveways as they are reviewed. My policy for access=private is to remove it for any driveway that provides access from a highway to apparent residence. If the driveway has two intersections with a highway which could provide a 'shortcut', i.e. a parcel with road frontage on multiple highways may have driveway to both, the access=private is left in place or added.

Since the intention is to be capable of provided accurate address data to first responders, error on the side of leaving an address point rather than removing it, is given when there is uncertainty if an addressable object exists on-the-ground.

Updates

New address points are released quarterly. The plan is to periodically conflate the new data points with the map to keep it current.

Data Preparation

Tagging Plans

Where duplicate addresses exist with different unit numbers, only one instance was kept. That is, no unit numbers were imported.

Address points will be tagged source=VGIN Virginia Address Points I now have a dedicated user account for the import, and will not be tagging individual nodes, as instructed on the Import/Guidelines page.

Data formatting

Downloaded Virginia Address points as SHP. Using QGIS, split vector layer by locality field (county), then split by zip code. They were split by county first to properly divide those zip codes that have the county line dissect them. Address points were exported from the shapefile to CSV, then used Excel to map the tags and format the values. Imported to OSM using JOSM. Used the Conflation plugin to add the points to map, then the Review plugin to navigate and view each point where it was combined with existing POI or building as needed.

Address Coordinates are using EPSG:3968

Buildings are imported using RapID. (See Augusta county in RapID)

Data Merge Workflow

Conflation

Existing addresses/buildings will be conflated with the import, so as to not create duplicates.
