copilot.travel is a free web planner for road trips in Europe. It routes a drive from the traveller's own town and prices it day by day: fuel per country, tolls and vignettes, ferries, and a bed for each night — campsite, motorhome stopover or rest area — with the source of every figure shown.

OpenStreetMap data

  • Routing with self-hosted Valhalla over OSM extracts of 37 European countries, using a vehicle's real height, width, length and weight, so a motorhome is kept off roads it does not fit.
  • Places from self-hosted Overpass API instances: campsites and caravan sites (tourism=camp_site, tourism=caravan_site), motorway rest areas, amenity=sanitary_dump_station, drinking water, LPG, fuel and charging stations, shops and sights.
  • What a sight is: the Wikipedia lead or Wikidata description linked from the OSM object, credited; otherwise what the OSM tags state (height, year built, what stands beside it).
  • Ferries from OSM route=ferry, with the operators' own published fares and timetables.

Other open data

  • Fuel prices: the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin, and the open price registers of France, Spain and Italy, Tankerkönig (Germany, CC BY 4.0) and E-Control (Austria).
  • Public transport and ferry timetables: national GTFS feeds published under the EU MMTIS regulation, via MOTIS.
  • Turn-by-turn guidance (beta): the Ferrostar navigation core on Valhalla's instructions, spoken in the traveller's language.
