Some railway platforms are too short for long trains, so the doors only open in some carriages of the train. Passengers must plan ahead and travel in the right carriage.

access:carriages=* can be used on public_transport=stop_position nodes to indicate which carriages can be used at this station. The tag follows the same logic as the *:lanes=* tag.

Disambiguation

This key is not to be confused with carriage=*, which indicates whether a roadway or other facility allows horse-drawn carriages. Horse-drawn railway lines are quite rare nowadays!

Examples

  • access:carriages=no|yes|yes|yes|yes|no means that the first and last carriage cannot be boarded at this platform, for a 6-car train.
  • access:carriages=yes|yes|no|... means that only the first 2 carriages can be boarded at this platform
  • access:carriages=...|no|yes|yes|yes|no|... means that only the middle 3 carriage can be boarded at this platform

For more info on the permitted syntax, see the documentation for exit:carriages=*
