Use public_transport=stop_position to identify the place where a vehicle stops along a public transport route to pick up or drop-off passengers (as distinct from the place where passengers wait for the service). This tag can be used for any transport mode, or combination of transport modes (including rail, bus, tram, flight, taxi and ship).

Use public_transport=platform and/or highway=bus_stop and/or railway=platform to identify the place where passengers wait for the service.

However, marking the stop position adds no information whatsoever when it is placed on the road at the point closest to highway=bus_stop or on the tram tracks closest to railway=tram_stop. In that case it can be abandoned.

How to map

Create a node on the highway, railway or other public transport route. Tag the node appropriately with:

Key Value Comment Recommendation
public_transport stop_position Defines this point as a stop position of the vehicle. mandatory
direction forward / backward / both

If the stop position applies only to one direction.

This is only necessary if there are routes in both directions of the way.

both is the default and thus usually unnecessary. Use it only if you think it adds clarity (e.g. to document a recent change from a past situation).

recommended only if it removes ambiguity
stop_position:direction forward / backward Use instead of the above if that would create a conflict with other tags on the same node, such as traffic signals. only if necessary

ref Reference Track number/platform number. Some people prefer to use local_ref=* for track/platform numbers, some prefer ref=*. Please note that ref=* might be in use for a network-wide unique reference of the stop position. recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional
ref:<abbreviation> Reference Reference number assigned by a the organisation whose abbreviation is <abbreviation>. optional
local_ref Reference Track number/platform number optional
uic_ref UIC reference The UIC identification by which the stop position is known. recommended if no public_transport=stop_area exists, otherwise optional

Consider also creating public_transport=platform, or highway=bus_stop etc., for the place close to the route where passengers wait for transport. These elements, together with any associated benches and buildings can be included within a public_transport=stop_area.
