addr:street_official=* is used to indicate the official spelling of the street name for a given address.
An address typically includes addr:housenumber=* and addr:street=*, the latter must match the name=* of the corresponding street. Street names follow the OSM mapping guidelines, e.g., no abbreviations. There are rare cases where the official spelling a street contains a typo, which gets fixed when we map it on OSM.
When the street name used on OSM is not 100% identical to the official name used by the authorities, we might store it as addr:street_official=*. This name matches official_name=* on the corresponding street.
This tag is mostly used in Belgium and Germany.
Example
A municipality names a street about the famous Belgian writer Guido Gezelle. But the official name in government database gets shortened as "G. Gezellestraat".
