bus:lanes=* describes the legal accessibility for buses on a per-lane basis. yes denotes lanes where buses are permitted but not dedicated (e.g. a bicycle lanes which permits buses) and designated denotes dedicated bus lanes (which may or may not be exclusive to them). Example: yes|yes|designated.
For bus-only lanes, restrictions applied to other vehicles must be represented explicitly using tags such as motor_vehicle:lanes=* or vehicle:lanes=*, since tagging a lane as designated does not imply that other vehicles are restricted from that lane.
Indicated bus:lanes by direction
The direction suffixes can be combined to define the indicated bus:lanes in a specific direction for a way: bus:lanes:backward=* and bus:lanes:forward=*.

Conditional restriction syntax
Note that, when adding conditional restrictions for this tag, although the condition may sometimes be in parentheses, the restriction value never is. For example, bus:lanes:conditional=yes|designated @ Mo-Fr 07:00-09:00 is syntactically correct, but bus:lanes:conditional=(yes|designated) @ Mo-Fr 07:00-09:00 is incorrect, since (yes|designated) is an invalid value for bus:lanes=*.
