When tagging a country, ISO3166-1:alpha2=* indicates the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code of that country. This code consists of two uppercase letters and is used in many software systems. You can use the ISO Online Browsing Platform to lookup these codes.
This tag can be added to:
- a node representation of the country (usually tagged as
place=country); - a boundary relation of the country (usually tagged as
boundary=administrativeandadmin_level=2).
This key can be combined with ISO3166-1:alpha3=* and ISO3166-1:numeric=*, which are three-letter and three-digit codes assigned by the same agency. For backward compatibility, ISO3166-1=* usually contains the same value as ISO3166-1:alpha2=*, due to the two-letter code being the most commonly used code. See Country code#ISO 3166-1 for more information about ISO 3166.
Possible tagging mistakes
The key ISO3166-1:alpha2=* should only be used on the country itself. Other objects referring to a country use a different key to indicate the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code of said country, most commonly country=* or a variation thereof.
