Status: in use

Sometimes, a speed restriction is added for a specific purpose which is explicitly signed. The reason is (usually) not legally binding and therefore doesn't affect maxspeed, source:maxspeed nor maxspeed:type. It nonetheless is helpful to inform data consumers why the speed limit was put in place, especially with a human readable value.

Current Usage

Currently, maxspeed:reason=* has no unified tagging scheme. The current values tend to be written in the local language, presumably copying the sign (e.g. Lärmschutz "noise control"(de), brak pasa awaryjnego "missing emergency lane"(pl), 環境対策 "environmental Measures"(ja)).

In addition, it's also used on Chinese railways.
