The use of the word "western" is criticized, but there exist no better known alternative.

This system is used worldwide, even in countries, which also teaches their traditional medical system at universities (e.g. in China or India). It has a foundation based on anatomy and physiology and is often evidence-based. Other (mostly derogatory) labels are school medicine and Error creating thumbnail: allopathic medicine, as well as (laudatory, but equally misleading) terms Error creating thumbnail: modern medicine and Error creating thumbnail: science-based medicine.
